Overview
When a house will not heat properly, the boiler gets the blame first and is frequently innocent. Cold radiators, uneven heat, hot water that works while the radiators stay cold and rooms that never reach the thermostat setting are usually caused by circulation, valves, controls or water quality — components spread across the property rather than inside the appliance.
A heating repair therefore has to start with the system rather than the boiler. Flow and return temperatures, pump operation, motorised and thermostatic valve behaviour, wiring centre and control logic, radiator distribution and system water condition all get considered together, because fixing one in isolation frequently just moves the symptom somewhere else.
That is the practical advantage of one engineer covering boilers, full system installations and plumbing. Sam has 15 years on the tools and works on all of it, so a repair is not artificially confined to whichever part of the system falls inside somebody's specialism.
The cost of leaving it
Cold spots at the bottom of radiators mean sludge has settled inside them. That sludge does not stay put — it circulates, and everything it passes through pays for it. Pumps wear, valves stick, the boiler's heat exchanger silts up, and a fault that started as one lukewarm radiator turns into a system-wide circulation problem and, eventually, an appliance failure that the manufacturer will not cover.
Control faults cost money quietly. A programmer that no longer switches off, a thermostat sited badly or a motorised valve stuck open means the system heats when nobody asked it to. There is no dramatic symptom; there is simply a higher bill every month until somebody investigates.
Leaks are the escalation people regret most. A weeping radiator valve is a five-minute repair. The same leak left through a winter destroys floorboards, carpet and ceilings below, and constant automatic top-up feeds oxygen into the system and accelerates the corrosion that caused the leak in the first place.
There is also the seasonal trap: heating faults are tolerated through spring and autumn because the house is bearable, then become urgent in the first cold week, when every engineer in Hampshire already has a full diary.

In detail
The recurring failures we see across north Hampshire housing, and what each one actually means.
A radiator cold at the top and warm at the bottom has air in it, and bleeding it will fix it — though air that keeps returning points to a leak drawing in air, a failing automatic air vent, or pumping over on an older vented system.
A radiator cold at the bottom and warm at the top is the opposite problem: sludge has settled in the panel and water is only passing across the top. Bleeding achieves nothing there. It needs flushing, and if several radiators show it, the system as a whole needs a powerflush.
A pump that is noisy, running hot or failing to develop head restricts the whole system. But pumps rarely fail for no reason — most die because they have been pushing debris-laden water for years. Replacing the pump without addressing the water simply resets the clock.
Setting the correct pump speed after replacement matters too. Too low and distant radiators starve; too high and the system becomes noisy and the boiler's return temperature climbs, pushing it out of condensing operation.
Thermostatic radiator valves seize, usually in the closed position, and usually because they have been left untouched all summer. The pin can often be freed rather than replaced. Lockshield valves are the ones used to balance the system, and they are the reason a house heats evenly or does not.
Motorised valves — two-port and three-port — are the components that decide whether heat goes to radiators, the cylinder, or both. A failed motorised valve or actuator is the classic cause of hot water working while the heating does not, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a boiler fault.
Programmers, room thermostats, cylinder thermostats and the wiring centre form the logic of the system. A fault here produces behaviour that looks random: heating on at odd hours, hot water heating when it should not, or a system that will not respond to the thermostat at all.
Diagnosing controls is a matter of proving each element in turn rather than replacing the thermostat because it is the visible one. Poor thermostat siting — above a radiator, in a draught, or in the coldest room in the house — causes plenty of complaints that are not faults at all.
Leaks show up as recurring pressure loss on a sealed system. Common sources are radiator valve glands, compression joints on pipework that has been disturbed, the pump head gasket, the pressure relief valve discharging outside, and radiators corroded through from the inside.
Finding the source is far preferable to using a leak sealer. Sealants can clog the very components — pumps, valves, plate heat exchangers — that you least want blocked, and they make the next diagnosis harder.
Magnetite sludge forms wherever oxygen reaches steel radiators, and hard Hampshire water adds limescale to the mix. Together they restrict circulation, wear pumps, block valves and coat heat exchangers.
The remedy is a powerflush where the system is heavily contaminated, followed by inhibitor and a magnetic filter to keep it clean. That is the difference between a repair that lasts and a repair that recurs.
