Domestic pipework is mostly copper and plastic barrier pipe, joined with compression fittings, push-fit fittings, or soldered joints on copper. Each has its place: soldered joints for concealed copper runs where reliability matters most, compression where the joint may need to be broken later, push-fit for speed and for plastic runs in awkward positions.

Most joint failures are installation failures rather than material failures — over-tightened olives, pipe cut out of square, inserts left out of plastic pipe, or copper and plastic mixed without the correct fittings. Repairing those properly means remaking the joint rather than tightening it further.

Traditional taps use rubber washers that wear; modern taps use ceramic disc cartridges that eventually crack or scale up. Hard water in this part of Hampshire shortens the life of both, which is why dripping is one of the most common calls.

Thermostatic mixers and shower valves are a separate category. Where they fail to hold temperature, the cause is usually scale on the cartridge or an imbalance in the hot and cold supplies feeding it, and fixing the underlying supply is what makes the repair stick.

Water travels along joists and under flooring before it appears, so the visible damp patch is very rarely above the actual leak. Tracing involves working back from the evidence: which supply is affected, whether the leak follows heating operation or water use, and whether pressure loss on the sealed heating system is involved.

Distinguishing a heating leak from a domestic water leak early saves a great deal of exploratory damage — another reason having one engineer covering both is practical rather than just convenient.

Kitchen and utility work is a steady part of domestic plumbing: moving a sink, connecting washing machines and dishwashers with proper isolating valves, fitting outside taps with the correct backflow protection, and altering pipework to suit a new layout.

The same applies to bathrooms. Where a basin, bath or shower is being relocated, supply and waste both need reworking, and waste falls in particular are what determine whether a new arrangement drains properly or gurgles and blocks.

Poor performance at an outlet is either a pressure problem, a flow problem, or a restriction at the outlet itself, and they have different causes. A partially closed stop tap, a scaled aerator, a failing pressure reducing valve and an undersized supply all produce similar complaints from the tap's perspective.

Noise is usually water hammer — the shock produced when a fast-closing valve stops moving water abruptly — or pipework that is inadequately clipped and vibrating against joists. Both are fixable, and both get worse with time rather than settling down.

For a burst or serious leak, the first action is to shut off the stop tap, then to open taps to drain down the affected section. Knowing where the stop tap is and that it turns is worth checking on a calm day rather than a bad one.
